MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Emergency crews rushed to an east Memphis gym Thursday afternoon after an SUV drove into the building.

It happened around 1 p.m. at God Body Fitness and Nutrition near the intersection of Park and Getwell.

Our crew arrived to find the SUV still inside the building.

Police say the vehicle hit a pedestrian, and at least two people were taken to the hospital.

The gym owner, known as Chef P, says fortunately the crash happened at a time when very few people are at the gym. Chef P, who has a strong faith, says it was God looking over him and the gym goers, saying he and a few others were right in the car’s path minutes, if not seconds, before the crash.

“We didn’t even know the vehicle was in the building,” he said. “It was like a big explosion in the front of the building, but if anybody would have been standing on this green carpet when this truck came plowing through my business, they would not be standing here.”

Chep P says all the equipment in the building can be replaced and that he started God Body with nothing more than two medicine balls and a jump rope, so he’s not afraid of having to rebuild.

Currently, the investigation is ongoing as to what lead to the driver crashing into the gym.
